Judging a book

I’ve noticed that when I head into the store with just A in tow, I get lots of smiles, oohhs, and ahs. When I have both kids, people try to steer clear of us. The little old ladies glare from a distance, and no matter how the kids try to charm the checkout clerks, they refuse to relent and give the kids a smile.

On Friday C got his first pair of glasses. And when I took both kids to the store today I got lots of smiles and “Oh, what adorable kids you have! They are so well behaved! He is just so CUTE!” They got extra stickers at Trader Joe’s, and a slice of cheese from the deli clerk at the grocery store.

My children behaved no differently than they ever do, but for whatever reason the addition of glasses to my son’s face make a world of difference.

If I had known it would be that easy to make friends with the little old ladies, I would have bought him a pair of frames three years ago.

  1. I like the new digs. That is hilarious about the glasses. So far my kids have not needed them to get attention, but I will keep it in mind.

  2. See? I told you they had cute glasses for kids these days. lol I’m glad he’s getting the attention. He’s a sweetie and he deserves it πŸ™‚

Also – I love the new place!

  3. ooh! Love what you’ve done with your new place! Sometimes I wish my kids were a little less cute, and that strangers would leave them alone. I actually yelled at a sweet old lady once this winter. We were walking home from the store, and the Princess had taken her coat off numerous times, and I had put it back on her. We’d finally compromised on coat on, but not zipped up.

Little old lady stood right in the centre of the sidewalk so we couldn’t get around her, and started oohing and ahhing at the kids and saying how cold it was and chastising me, and trying to do the Princess’s coat up for her while she backed away from this stranger. I lost it and told the lady that “yes, my kids are cute, and while I can’t blame you for wanting to admire them, they don’t know you. She doesn’t want her damn coat done up, so leave them be, and let us go around you!”

Not my proudest moment. I really am a cranky bitch.

  4. Love the new place! That’s too funny that a pair of glasses totally changed the way that people reacted to the kids.
